Academics from Japanese universities visit Envera as a benchmark in intellectual disabilities

Madrid | August 30, 2017

Envera has received the visit of professors from various universities in Japan, experts in social welfare and interested in learning about the policies and actions to support people with intellectual disabilities that are carried out in Spain.

Envera's CEO, Pedro Sobrino, received them at the Association's headquarters in Madrid, where they were able to learn about the work that Envera carries out accompanying people with disabilities from birth and throughout their lives, offering comprehensive assistance and becoming a support when it comes to social and labor insertion. A task that, as Pedro Sobrino recalled, "Envera has been carrying out for forty years and that would not have been possible without the support of the public administration and companies, to whom we explain that social responsibility is a strategic element for organizations to be more competitive".

The academics visited the Early Attention and Neurodevelopment Service, where Envera's team of professionals showed them how they work with the youngest children (0 to 6 and 7 to 18 years old) offering comprehensive treatment ranging from speech therapy and physiotherapy to school support and family counseling, among other areas. In addition, thanks to the latest advances and the collaboration of companies, this service has a mirror room and a multisensory room for the development of sessions with children.

Although there are special education schools in Japan, teachers have shown interest in the training model for employment developed by Envera, which aims to develop social and academic skills to achieve job placement. For this purpose, there are several training programs adapted to the needs of the students and which include work experience in companies and public administration.

For Professor Fuminori Tamba, from Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, who headed the Japanese delegation, "it is important to know from what perspective care for people with special needs is provided in other countries" and he wanted to highlight the "two wings of the same bird, social insertion and labor insertion, which Envera works on together".

Before the end of the visit, the workers of the Special Employment Center shared their experience with the teachers and showed how, with the necessary support, we can all be the best at something.
