Gran Canaria : October 17
The Councilor for Social Policy, Accessibility, Equality and Diversity of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Isabel Mena, inaugurated this Wednesday with Enrique Grande, general director of Envera, the expansion of the Occupational Center that the entity has in the municipality of Carrizal de Ingenio intended to serve 60 adults with intellectual disabilities. The expansion, which has increased by 25 places available, has been carried out thanks to a grant from the Institute of Social and Socio-Sanitary Care (IAS).
"We thank the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the Councilor Isabel Mena for their help and predisposition in the path that we travel along with people with disabilities in different areas such as training, employment promotion or sports so that they can occupy their place in the world with dignity. A path by and for people," said Grande.
The expansion consisted in the construction of an upper floor with an open-plan room where residents can enjoy occupational therapy workshops, cognitive and communication skills, handicrafts or radio, among others. To develop these workshops, Envera will hire ten additional professionals, both technicians and caregivers, to work with the beneficiaries on key aspects of their development, skills, independence and self-esteem, relying on Radio Terrícola, a project that was born in 2013 with the idea of raising awareness about disability through a grid of programs and whose team of reporters is composed of people with intellectual disabilities.
The Minister herself participated in a special program where she was asked about the resources available for people with disabilities, the inclusive employment strategy and the incorporation of new beneficiaries.
Finally, Mena also visited the Special Employment Center through which Envera provides stable employment to 30 people with disabilities as well as to the students of the Click Envera 2024 program. Click Envera 2024. Access the World of Work which the Department of Social Policy, Accessibility, Equality and Diversity finances with 14,724 euros.

The training project, which will run until December 23, 2024, aims to bridge the digital divide for 10 women with intellectual disabilities or mental illness to increase their chances of accessing the labor market.
The initiative is in its second year, after having achieved the job placement of two women in the 2022 edition, and is designed so that the beneficiaries are trained in digital and technological skills and manage to promote their inclusion, autonomy and independence through modules on the latest technologies in communication, the management of the digital world and basic procedures in auxiliary training services.
