The wage gap and the risk of poverty among the population with disabilities are maintained

The 2014 Olivenza Report on disability in Spain, prepared by the State Disability Observatory (OED) and published at the end of 2014, shows comparatively the situation of the disabled population in our country. It highlights the fact that the risk of poverty affects 32% of the disabled population, almost five points above the general population. The percentage of severe poverty is also pronounced, affecting 14.7% of the disabled population, compared to 9.6% of the non-disabled population.

With respect to the active working population, the analysis of gross earnings (salary) indicates relevant differences of close to 2,500 euros per year between people with and without disabilities, with very marked differences according to sex and age.

With respect to rights, and specifically to education, the disadvantages show certain signs of stagnation, especially in terms of reducing illiteracy rates in the population with disabilities. The differences in access to higher education are, on the other hand, very marked: almost 21% of the population without disabilities have higher education, compared to a meager 6.7% of the population with disabilities.
with disabilities.

The social integration scenario continues to be one in which the gaps with respect to the non-disabled population are widest. The Olivenza report details information on the scarcity of social relations, opportunities for participation, for example in leisure activities. 21.5% of the population with disabilities acknowledges that they have very few or no friends, and the majority (91%) find it difficult to participate in cultural, sports or recreational activities due to their disability.
